ABSTRACT

Classical, or “serious” music, as it is often called, is a very different genre and market from the pop music business. When a symphony orchestra plays a symphonic work, it must rent the parts for up to 105 musicians, depending upon the size of the orchestra. The two primary publishers of classical music in the United States are Theodore Presser, distributed by Hal Leonard, and G. Schirmer, distributed by Music Sales. These companies also distribute the music of many European music print pub - lishers. Similar conditions prevail for opera performances and chamber music recitals.
