ABSTRACT

How is a word’s referent related to its sense? What we have seen so far is that they are different, the sense being some general category such as ‘house’ or ‘bicycle’, and the referent being some particular individual or object. In the diagrams we also treat them quite differently, using different kinds of lines to link them to the word concerned, and different names to distinguish them from one another. And yet there is obviously some connection between them; for example, if we refer to a house it is no coincidence that we use the word house rather than bicycle.
