ABSTRACT

Spaces In-between are the often-overlooked spaces beyond formal creative delivery and traditional museum provision, whether physical or intangible, planned or accidental, that can emerge during research and work with children and families. Climate is in the air, in the atmosphere, ephemeral, intangible, difficult to describe and control, but impossible to ignore. The climate can encourage Spaces In-between by accepting each visitor’s choices as to how they use the space. Climate in turn shapes the Landscape or terrain, the physical space manifesting the qualities that make people want to be there. Spaces such as these form a landscape, sitting within and shaped by the wider climate of the museum. Museums are places of “chance encounters and of the imagination”. Landmarks are the embodiment of this and can take infinite forms, both physical and abstract. Landmarks can also be serendipitous, a chance find, an unexpected detail.
