ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, the four-activity model was introduced and I attempted to explain how the activities of the various methods of therapy could be interpreted in the FAM. I hope it is clear that a specific intervention taken out of context will not distinguish a counselor who subscribes to the FAM from a counselor who doesn’t. That is, asking a client to consider the similarities between his current and past work difficulties will involve the same conversation whether or not the therapist considers it a Category 1 activity. In the same way, people accurately predict that apples fall to Earth whether one subscribes to Newtonian physics, Einstein’s theories, or the animistic view that apples embrace the Earth because they love it so. It’s just that one model will take you farther in understanding and successfully intervening in a wider variety of situations.
