ABSTRACT

Clinical rehabilitation counselors are the only counselors who provide counseling services purposely tailored to people with disabilities or chronic illness. A foundational principle in understanding assistive technology in the field states: "Assistive technology without assistance is not assistive". Clinical rehabilitation counselors not only address the medical and physical needs of their clients, they also address how the disability is impacting the individual psychologically and socially. Clinical rehabilitation counselors are dually trained in clinical mental health and often work in settings that require case conceptualization and treatment planning. The Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling option is dually accredited with Clinical Mental Health Counseling, making graduates eligible for state licensure and multiple national certifications, as well as third-party insurance reimbursement. Clinical rehabilitation counselors work in settings where people with disabilities need services, including: state agencies, independent living centers, Veterans Affairs, private rehabilitation counseling forensic firms, medical and mental health settings, private practice, and higher education settings.
