The cloud is a collection of technologies that usually are accessed via web portal. Thus, the cloud is interfaced through a web server and other backend components. This chapter examines the web system qualities. It focuses on the types of services that the cloud should support. Performance is a critical concern for any organization offering a website. There are two widely used metrics to measure website performance: client-perceived response time and system performance. Apache benchmarking tool measures the response time under load testing. The chapter then explores means of ensuring availability for three types of hardware that make up a website, the server, the network, and the storage. Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a form of storage technology that promotes greater accuracy and availability of disk storage through redundancy. A high-availability (HA) cluster refers to a group of servers that are controlled by HA software to utilize redundant servers in the group.
