ABSTRACT

The reminiscence museum consists of a series of specially constructed rooms built in the basement of the Akropolis' care home. The Akropolis building in which the reminiscence museum is based comprises two blocks of apartments facing towards one another across a huge central covered atrium. The recollection is placed as relative to a common past that is shared by the women of growing up in the local area where the museum is now situated. Five women (Wl-5) were accompanied by two professionals (MW) from another nursing home. This small conversation takes place in 'the kitchen', where one of the women sees an old-fashioned moneybox. The organisation has a nearly fifty year history of running care facilities principally in the Rotterdam area. It currently maintains over thirty care homes. A pivotal moment in the history of Humanitas was the appointment of Hans Becker as director in 1992.
