ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the transitions that soldiers, wives, and their children face, and considers the major life transitions from citizen to soldier, from civilian family to military family, and back. It draws on how societies use myth, ritual, and ceremony to guide individuals through major transitions. The chapter examines how these ceremonies are frequently omitted or fail to adequately respond to the reality of repeated deployments, over the course of which feeling fully at home can become ever more elusive. Quincy Stevenson's depiction of the soldier-in-combat and the soldier-at-home as two distinct mindsets associated with distinct actions, responses, and responsibilities fits the model that our society holds of the soldier and civilian as two distinct and contrasting social roles or positions. Perhaps the most important aspect of Comprehensive Soldier Fitness is its inclusion of the family as a base for soldier fitness.
