ABSTRACT

The concern for coherence and connection arises out of design and architectural theory, of course. The design field in general deals with the questions of coherence and connections. Alberta Edmonton success at enforcing height restrictions and historical references along Whyte Avenue goes against the 20th-century trend of ignoring the street and the coherence it can provide. The chapter deals with Philip Johnson’s vision of the street as a way to build the centre and a way to produce coherence. Excellent teachers might be able to achieve some of that desired coherence on the fly, while teaching. Every K-12 teacher knows the word scaffolding and knows that effectiveness in teaching implies building current learning on the foundation of students’ prior learning. Some teachers ask their students to find links to other units or other courses, another way of making connections and building coherence.
