ABSTRACT

All types of research are communal in nature, and action research has been associated with collaboration since its inception. When working collaboratively, teachers are often organized into teacher study groups consisting of four or five teachers, one of whom may be designated as the facilitator. Teacher study groups could include building teams, grade level teams, or any formal or informal gathering of teachers whose purpose is to discuss teaching and learning. A variety of topics can be undertaken by teacher study groups, including those related to school change, issues of equity, and problems associated with site based management. In this book, the primary focus is on instructional improvement.
