ABSTRACT

Collectors, including major and minor avenues, are distinctive for their roles as the linkages between arterials and local streets. As such, the contexts of collectors resonate with diverse functions and contemporary applications. Efficient connection, greening, and the opportunity for social interaction often define contemporary collector contexts, by the contemporary use of curb buffer zones, surfaces, and avenue cross-connections, often within a pedestrian accommodating human scale. Both inductive and deductive strategies are apparent in contemporary applications, with influences from Smart Streets and urban greening approaches evident in the current planning and design of collector avenues. All of these factors continue to generate numerous studies, standards, and documents aimed at promoting walkable and livable urban contexts, along collector avenues. The challenge is the need to anticipate the effects of increasing populations in urban contexts, along with the requirement to respond to climate change and the need for urban greening, including green spaces and social places.
