ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with quest of the great warrior Beowulf to surmount our torment. It examines the process of therapy, using the techniques of psychotherapy, hypnosis, imagery, and dreamwork to heal the wounds of childhood traumas. From across the sea, in the Land of the Geats, King Hrothgar’s plight is heard in the hall of King Hygelac, the uncle of the great Geat warrior Beowulf. Beowulf, hearing of the plight of Hrothgar, decides to go to the king’s rescue. When Beowulf and his men arrive on the shores of Denmark, neither Hrothgar nor his men expect him. The harbor sentry is surprised to see such a well-armed ship arrive in the daytime: “No armed men have ever ventured to land so openly,” he muses. The arrival of Beowulf s ship in daylight surprises the Sentry. The Sentry trusts Beowulf when he arrives with openness.
