ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the issues of pilot selection from an updated perspective. It reviews the selection process used with air traffic controllers, a related aerospace occupation which also faces shortages, and which shares the need to find individuals with the capability to perform a job demanding of exceptionally high levels of reliability. In order to remain competitive and reduce costs, airlines have significantly reduced pilot compensation, especially for those in entry-level positions. Education requirements are set by the airlines. Pilots currently filling the ranks at regional carriers often have less than a traditional college degree. Knowledge, skills, abilities and other attributes (KSAOs) refer to the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other attributes deemed as either necessary or desirable for a candidate to possess. Pilots must possess knowledge of aircraft and aircraft systems. Abilities may be improved by training and practice; though at a considerable cost of training resources. Other attributes considered essential include personality characteristics.
