ABSTRACT

Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and other mechanical systems play a key role in creating a healthy and comfortable work environment. Building commissioning focuses on proper system validation and operation. The World Health Organization (WHO) report titled ‘The Right to Healthy Indoor Air’ (2000) states the following: ‘Indoor air quality is an important determinant of population health and wellbeing. In India, the ambient air quality does not meet ambient quality standards most of the time. To ensure good indoor air quality and to avoid the infiltration of polluted ambient air, it is highly necessary to have a tight building envelope and keep the entire building positively pressurized as compared to the ambient air. Owners and investors benefit financially from well-commissioned, sustainable buildings. Performance of HVAC and other mechanical systems impacts indoor environment quality (IEQ), energy consumption and maintenance requirements.
