ABSTRACT

An important theme has been emerging from the discussion of the first two parts of the book. This is the theme of personal change and its relationship to political change. This theme will provide the focus of Chapter 10, where it will be discussed in terms of authenticity. However, it is not possible to examine it in any depth without first addressing another underlying theme of the book: the question of language. So before I can address questions of personal and political change more directly, it is necessary to make a diversion into a discussion of the theory of language. Language is the subject of this chapter.
