ABSTRACT

As board members serving in school governance roles, we see these archetypes in the school districts as well. Marge Micro is elevated to board president after a superintendent squanders public money, and Yogi Union wins in a landslide when teachers are upset. As a board member, one will want to understand what is important when dealing with community caricatures. In actuality, the communication doorways are constructed in the personalities, and they are very much hardwired but can change over time. The community members provide us hints about the nature of their open doorways to communication by what they say to us and how they respond to us. Difference Makers see the positive things in community members' personalities and recognize that the how of conversation must be prioritized over the what of the conversation's content.
