ABSTRACT

The maxillary nerve block can result in drying of the cornea, protrusion of the globe, and reduced eyelid movement. All effects return to normal when the anesthetic agent is metabolized. The patient must remain in a safe environment, free of objects that may cause injury since vision remains in only one eye. Global protrusion and corneal desiccation are prevented by intraoperative ophthalmic ointment. Sinusitis is treated by removal of the primary cause and by sinus flushing postoperatively.
