ABSTRACT

In this chapter, reasonable and achievable goals, strategies and policies for smart growth will be devised using the materials presented in the first four chapters, as well as extracting the most important operational texts in the field of smart transportation. This chapter includes 24 strategies in order to achieve the main goal of this book. These strategies are start points for combining smart growth theory with sustainable transport in cities. However, there can be more strategies for smart growth and transportation and this chapter leads to start thinking about how we can have smart growth while planning for sustainable transportation rather than a complete list. This chapter includes a variety of strategies from optimal land use in line with targeted development in existing urban areas, or providing a variety of transportation options to setting appropriate design standards for improving the quality of sidewalks; and preventing urban sprawl, all of which help towards planning and designing a compact city.
