ABSTRACT

Twenty-–ve years ago I had a dream, a day dream if you will. A dream shared with many of you.

My dream was –lled with the wild excitement of seeing a machine act like a human being, at least in many ways.*

In his address, Bledsoe went on to describe a computer with many interesting capabilities (e.g., recognition of faces, ºuency in written and oral communications, etc.). In some ways, the computer might even become a person’s friend or a personal assistant that performs a variety of helpful tasks.
