ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the influence of more recent conceptualizations of giftedness related to developmental and cognitive theoretical explanations. It attempts to fill the research gap by presenting prevalent perspectives on giftedness in the context of language and culture. Most Filipinos speak the dialect of their province as their first language, Filipino, and Philippine English both in its formal and informal variety. In the Philippines, the most significant research on conceptions of giftedness was E. Camara’s research on reconceptualizing giftedness based specifically in the Filipino context. The chapter presents the data obtained from the respondents on their conceptions of giftedness. The first part of the discussion presented the most typical responses under each of the main topics, namely, indicators, notions, origins, development, and cultural nuances of giftedness. The second part presents some notable differences within groups and an explanation of the major findings in the context of the Filipino culture.
