ABSTRACT

This chapter lays the foundation for the need for a new treatment approach to eating disorders.

The current main theoretical approaches are critiqued for their theoretical strengths and weaknesses. The best practice model that uses elements from the different theoretical streams, while crossing theoretical divides, rather ignores the question of the need for a unified theory to explain the illness process and, thus, to provide a rationale for treatment. Rather, it seems to have chosen treatments on the basis that each problem is addressed as a separate element.
