ABSTRACT

This chapter presents and discusses literature review on tourism. Tourism is not an inherent social phenomenon. Rather, it is a social process. Tourism associates with globalisation. What happens in globalisation may parallel to that in tourism. There are many ways to conceptualise tourism. Tourism is based on the division between home and away experience, and between working time and free time. Alternatively, tourist performance and performance of local workers produce and reproduce a place as a tourist attraction. I suggest value of local culture can be reconstructed through different processes of tourism. This chapter also touches upon the interrelatedness of globalisation and tourism; particularly regarding them as global tourism.
