ABSTRACT

When I first set about to investigate the traditional theological doctrine of timelessness, I was reasonably sure that the doctrine would be found to have a number of clearly identifiable theological attractions, as well as a number of clearly identifiable theological shortcomings. I suspected, for example, that the intimate logical connections between the doctrine of timelessness on the one hand, and the doctrines of immutability, incorruptibility and ingener-ability on the other hand, would prove to be a source of merit. On the other side, I thought that one of the shortcomings of the doctrine would probably turn up in connection with the traditional doctrine of divine omnipotence. I had intended to write an essay in which both the strength and the weakness of this doctrine would be exposed, analysed and compared.
