ABSTRACT

Statistics has often been called an art and a science. Likewise, performance monitoring requires the combination of methodological rigour with judgment to navigate our way through a series of competing priorities and tradeoffs. Table 13.1 sets out what we consider to be the main dichotomies that we’ve discussed in this book. They can be distilled into two conflicts between simple and complex and between specific and general. The best answer often lies somewhere in-between.
