ABSTRACT

This chapter mainly systematises the findings from the earlier chapters, with a focus on similarities and differences, and it also discusses the issues around spirituality and personal development. In North America, liberal religion mainly refers to socio-political progressiveness, not to theological issues. Elsewhere, the very notion of God is often a central focus, with feminist theologians rejecting the traditional patriarchal image of God. In contrast to the institutionalisation of liberal versions in Judaism and Protestantism, Catholicism and Islam are limited to individual liberal thinkers. And the ‘boldness’ of liberal ideas is also less pronounced in the latter two. Overall conclusion: current outlook for liberal religion is not promising.
