The proportion of the global population living in cities has never been higher, and this trend is set to magnify by 2050, when over 70% of the world’s population will be urban. Combining public transport and bike share can offer the best of both worlds, and it is clear that many bike share users are choosing to integrate with public transport, helping to make up for the inherent weaknesses in each. The ability of bike share to deliver benefits will be related to the degree to which it acts as a replacement for car use. Cities need to view bike share in terms of what it offers in meeting their wider strategic objectives. If a city plans its transport system with the intention of making car use convenient and affordable, it will always be very difficult for bike share to succeed as anything other than a fun thing for tourists.
