ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the way post-revolutionary Americans wrote about England, it is possible to comment on the cultural processes of the early national period and the intellectual residue of a conservative revolution. It represents the reconciliation of no longer being English and the coming to terms with a new American identity. American society in the early national period was faced with an intellectual dilemma that affected most, if not all, aspects of public and private life. While America needed Britain as a trading partner, it was inevitable that business would only reinforce links already established through family or historical connections. The close post-revolutionary connections between England and America indicate that wartime hatred was quickly overcome by economic expediency as well as a genuine desire for peace and the resumption of amicable relations. The War of 1812 was part of the process of refining political and cultural independence.
