ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in this book. The book talks about the essential and valuable contribution that social science in general has made to a small slice of the human condition, and in particular the preparation of people to become professional practitioners in the field of health and social welfare. The collective, collaborative and cooperative quest for 'the good society' is not only linked to virtue through service giving, but also allows the individual to achieve a degree of self-actualisation along the way. Policy makers must also engage in the widest possible inclusion of all stakeholders, including trades unions, professional associations in their various forms and the appropriate standards and regulatory bodies. Students will need to be offered an education that broadens their horizons, sets the scene, gives them access to an extensive body of knowledge which they can supplement from their own experience, and prepare for and be mentored towards fitness to practice.
