ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book aims to fill the biographical and critical gap of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's activities in Gottingen against the backdrop of a European, and cosmopolitan, intellectualism. In order to reconstruct the Gottingen of 1799 as authentically as possible to Coleridge's experiences, the book draws on contemporary primary sources. The book provides insight into post-Gottingen influences and references that have hitherto remained unidentified. It examines Coleridge not just as a canonical figure, but also as an episode in intellectual history and educational travel. Due to the excellent records in his extant letters, notebooks, and library borrowings, Coleridge is one of a handful of European intellectuals whose footsteps at the University of Gottingen can be examined in quite some detail. In methodology, Gottingen fostered Coleridge's scholarly approach.
