ABSTRACT

This part conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters. The part examines the major international legal documents which concern the treatment of women has, through the application of three analytic categories, revealed strikingly different conceptualizations of the proper role of women in society. Continued effort to implement non-discriminatory and corrective provisions and to redraft outdated protective ones can increase the acceptance of this view of women domestically and internationally. The corrective and non-discriminatory treaties and agreements, then, stand as progressive statements which can aid national international efforts to advance the status of women. Implicit conceptualizations of women's role in society have moved away from a restrictive definition of women as wife and mother only, reflected in earlier protective measures, towards in the documents a more dynamic conceptualization of women's role. Every effort should be made to encourage States to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
