ABSTRACT

This book documents an early stage of the application of tracking technologies in tourism, which is one of the fi rst fi elds in which these methods have been implemented, probably because of the centrality of mobility in tourism. We hope that we managed to infuse the reader with some of our enthusiasm on the subject. If properly applied in tourism research, tracking technologies could be revolutionary, pushing the boundaries of tourism studies and improving policy making, planning, and tourism management. While touching upon the challenges and problems involved, this book presents these technologies’ potential as tools for gathering data on the spatial whereabouts of tourists at any given time, potential that must still be developed by further empirical research. Concluding this book is a diffi cult task. It seems that every day brings with it advances in this new and emerging fi eld; putting down the pen is thus diffi cult to do.
