ABSTRACT

Running for office was the best learning experience I have ever had. I met a variety of people from many walks of life–from the lady in the wheelchair whose home I walked to (who had heard about me before and was anxious to meet me) to the children in the Fourth of July parade on Key Biscayne. They all bring back wonderful memories. The fourteen-month campaign gave my family and me an opportunity to work on a project as a team, although there were days when my husband walked door to door in the pouring rain, when my daughter called for volunteers and everyone turned her down, and when I was at a speaking engagement until midnight and came home exhausted. My eldest daughter, Carolyn, came home from law school in New York City one weekend and spent the whole time canvassing.
