ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in this book. The book investigates Sweden's Third World policies, Kenneth Hermele and Karl-Anders Larsson entitled their work Solidaritet eller Imperialism to call attention to the double face of Sweden's policies toward the developing states. It suggests that Swedish policies toward Third World countries did not differ much from those of other Western/Capitalist states if its economic interests were threatened. Sweden's aid policies were quite 'progressive' compared to the other Western/Capitalist states. The book explores a slight departure from Hermele and Larsson's contention: that is, Sweden's policy toward South Africa differed from those of many Western/Capitalist states. Sweden's trade with South Africa becomes even more insignificant when one looks at, say, the United States' trade with Apartheid South Africa. The essential role the Swedish labor movement in particular played in the struggle against apartheid is still remembered and cherished by South African labor leaders.
