ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of the book. According to Brauman, humanitarian space is, primarily a way of measuring the humanitarian conditions. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) are the strongest proponents of humanitarian space. For ICRC, humanity, independence, impartiality and neutrality are part of its mandate under international law. Non-governmental organization (NGO) calls for armed intervention in order to stop the killing in Kosovo and Rwanda then contributed to the integration of peacekeeping and humanitarian action. Similarly, in Somalia, Colombia and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), chronic complex emergencies have meant long-term engagement resulting in the blurring of humanitarian, peace-building and reconstruction agendas. India's desire to support Third World sovereignty has been tempered by both the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) demands for standardisation and its own interest in opening up opportunities for Indian business abroad.
