In this chapter, the author wants to say something about approaches to learning that are not Self managed learning (SML) – but which attempt to masquerade as SML. He indicates some myths about SML as well as some real problems with the approach. The author suggests some directions in terms of desirable actions for the future. One of people motives in developing self managed learning as a formalized approach to management development was our desire to address these issues. Reynolds has commented on this phenomenon. Participative is regarded as an OK term to attach to a course, but participation in what is rarely specified. He therefore decided that the content of this course would now be the content of all future courses for team leaders. He also dispensed with the one-day planning event.
