ABSTRACT

The prominence of climate change adaptation in the consciousness of the policy community, the public, and the business community is much higher today than even a year ago. The business community will face more policy and stakeholder interest in what they are doing to adapt to climate change, a subject most executives have had relatively little experience with to date. Adaptation to climate change will inevitably become an element of corporate enterprise risk management, corporate environmental policy, and business prudence for many companies either exposed to or vulnerable to such impacts. The sooner corporate leaders start to prepare their organizations for this shift, the easier the process. Corporate decision-makers will increasingly conclude both that adaptation is 'worth it' from a corporate risk management perspective, and that they can successfully integrate adaptation in corporate risk management processes. Corporate decision-makers need to understand that they have an important leadership role to play in structuring the process.
