ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book describes the contaminant sources, cycling, and accumulation in components of the biosphere, including movement into individuals, through trophic webs, across landscapes, and around the entire biosphere. The human species is having enormous adverse impact on the biosphere relative to its ability to provide an appealing home for us and for valued species. The science of ecotoxicology is a part of the knowledge needed to protect the quality of the lives. Ecotoxicological knowledge and activities are no less important than our industrial, financial, or political knowledge and activities. Few people would willingly abandon the right to clean water and an aesthetically pleasing environment. Global climate change is currently considered an important confounding factor in many ecotoxicology studies. Clearly, new facts enhance the appreciation of the world and facilitate wise decisions.
