ABSTRACT

Throughout this book I have posed a number of questions. I have done so primarily because I am concerned that as a society we are attempting to respond to the threat posed by an apparently growing social problem, but in my opinion without a thorough consideration or understanding of exactly what it is we are trying to tackle. Having examined much of the available literature on hate crimes, I would now like to return to some of those questions to see if we are any clearer about what hate crime actually is, or any clearer about how we should respond to it.
