ABSTRACT

Public health is a vague and comprehensive term. It can be used to include a wide range of services, from housing to the inspection of foodstuffs, which have little connection save that they are necessary to the physical well-being of the community. It often includes the basic sanitary services of drainage and sewage disposal, street cleaning and refuse removal. I have dealt elsewhere with these matters, so I shall confine this chapter to the medical services operating directly on the individual either by wav of notification, inspection or treatment.
