ABSTRACT

In hospitals, conflicts between patients or their family members and service providers are not uncommon. In addition, conflicts between staff members occur as in any other workplace. Most of these conflicts can be prevented or resolved. This chapter takes up a few situations that commonly result in conflicts and discusses ways of resolving and preventing them. In a hospital, conflicts mostly occurs when the needs of a patient or his family members are not fulfilled; some of the service providers behave inappropriately with them; and required information is not provided to them. During a conflict, it is not uncommon for people to deviate from the main issue and talk about their other grievances. In such a situation, we can assure them that those issues can be dealt with at a later stage, and encourage them to focus on the issue that led to the problem.
