ABSTRACT

This chapter describes potential scenarios for application of drones in smart city scenarios. It addresses the analysis of the performance of networks of drones for smart city application scenarios. The chapter provides a detailed overview of the existing architectures for building networks of drones. It introduces the simulation environment and provides a detailed performance evaluation of the different architectures. The chapter discusses the architectures defined in the literature for building a network of drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). In the case of stationary drones while users move on the ground, all architectures still guarantee a very low latency in both types of transmissions. Overall, given the complexity deriving from satisfying all scenarios and the timeliness required to address emergency situations, the possibility to design and deploy programmable and adaptable drone networks could represent an interesting and promising research area.
