ABSTRACT
Th e Christian Democratic movements, as was said earlier, though conservative are not traditionalist. This is not for lack of tempting traditions to cling to. In Belgium, for example, the roots of the Catholic movement go back to a sort of Golden Age of rural and small town felicity at the end of the eighteenth century; the sleepy but pleasant years before the French Revolution and Napoleon shattered the Europe of the old regime.
