ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the encounters between therapists at Northland Clinic and their clients. The interviews involve putting into practice the philosophy of ecosystemic brief therapy and its various techniques and strategies. Ecosystemic brief therapy interviews involve several parties who share a practical concern for remedying the problems at hand, but their related interests and understandings are often very different. There is a sense in which ecosystemic brief therapy interviews start when Northland Clinic therapists go to the waiting area to invite clients to join them in an interviewing room. Problems may be located within a variety of social contexts in ecosystemic brief therapy, including clients' family systems, social relations at work or school, and involvements with neighbors and friends. Ecosystemic brief therapists' interests in systemic questions are generally similar to their interests in mapping remedies. The questions are designed to construct concrete problems and remedies for clients, as well as to offer clients hope for the future.
