ABSTRACT

The construction industry in Singapore has played a highly important role in the transformation of Singapore’s economy and society from a typically developing country to those of an industrialised and developed country within the course of one generation. During that period, the construction industry has been transformed in many of its aspects. This chapter discusses the current state of the construction industry and the history behind it, as well as the future challenges. It considers the aims and objectives of construction industry development in Singapore and discusses the main programmes which have been implemented to attain them. The chapter talks about institution building and administrative framework; legal and contractual issues, industry procedures and practices and resource development; technology development; corporate development; and project performance criteria, monitoring and management. It also explores the issues of productivity, quality, safety and application of information and telecommunication technology (ICT).
