ABSTRACT

The decision for construction of a new bridge at Vidin - Calafat is the response to real transport demand in Europe and will promote the integration process on the continent. The new bridge is an important policy instrument for regional stability and attracts international financing through the Stability Pact. Being located at the crossing-point of the land-based and the waterway transport corridors, the future road/rail bridge will provide a good range of new transport logistics solutions with effect on the availability, condition, speed and loading capacity, which will undoubtedly result in journey time advantages. Construction of a combined rail and road bridge over the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania at Vidin - Calafat is the first priority project anticipated for attaining this strategic objective. It is not the bridge that makes the corridor, as Corridor IV exists and its importance for all-European integration has been duly appraised.
