ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to move away from the past and instead look toward the future through showcasing interview data gathered from teachers involved in the provision of English language education in Japan. An open call for interviewees was first disseminated across the various networks of professional acquaintances and colleagues of the authors of this volume. Moreover, the open call was also posted on various teaching forums within Japan. The call sought participants able to engage in semi-structured email interviews with possible follow-up questions related to native-speakerism in Japan. A final point of observation concerns the actual label "native-speakerism", or the extent to which the naming of a practice influences perceptions of what actual practices constitute such naming. While all participants made reference to native-speakerism, there was no way of knowing exactly what they believed was and was not included as a constituent of native-speakerism.
