ABSTRACT

A number of food security-related incidences over the past decade have challenged our thinking about food security causes and the impact of shocks and stresses on food supply and household consumption. The current discourse and future concerns around these issues are introduced to inform research and update practitioners about these matters. The chapter briefly introduces the topics of food systems and the key drivers leading to changing demand and pressure on the sustainable use of resources for food production. The biophysical environment; demographics; extreme weather conditions; political, economic and social issues as well as food waste are presented to raise awareness of the need to consider them within the boarder context of policy food security analysis and policymaking.
