ABSTRACT

Among activists, parents, and educators, renewed interest has emerged regarding the negative impact of sex-role stereotyping in the media (See Invisible Women, 2007; Jane, 2005). As one caregiver stated, “Though it’s been more than 30 years since feminists first drew attention to the stereotyped gender messages delivered by mainstream television, movies, and books, men and women are still often portrayed in very traditional roles” (Mithers, 2001, ¶18). Another writer pointed out that television programs “still show mom with the babies and kids. Most domicile publications still show women vacuuming, cleaning and cooking” (Cohen, 2006, ¶23).
