ABSTRACT

The original Night Work Convention was adopted by the General Conference of the International Labour Organisation in 1919. In 1934 General Conference requested a Conference Committee to consider possible revisions of the Convention. The first proposed revision concerned the exemption from the Convention's terms of women in higher posts. The need for a second revision of the Convention was raised during the regular process of ten year reporting on the Convention, established by the International Labour Organisation. The primary concern of those wanting revisions was the desire for an even more flexible definition of "night" than that established by the 1934 Convention. The International Labour Conference may, at any session at which the matter is included in its agenda, adopt by a two-thirds majority draft amendments to any one or more of the preceding Articles of Part II of the Convention. The formal ratifications of the Convention shall be communicated to the Director-General of the International Labour Office for registration.
