ABSTRACT

Taiwan cinema experienced a commercial revival when Wei Te-sheng's debut feature film, Cape No.7, became box office sensation in 2008. Since then, there have been many commercially successful Taiwanese projects produced and directed by variety of local filmmakers. While Wei remains localised talent with little exposure in the West, he is arguably one of the most representative Taiwanese filmmakers of the twenty-first century. This chapter examines the international film festivals and their interactions with Taiwan and Asian cinema. It demonstrates the social, political and cultural transformations in Taiwan cinema, together with the change and continuity in the international film arena. The chapter also examines an Interview of Wei Te-sheng, which was taken by Ming-yeh T. Rawnsley and Robert Ru-shou Chen, in the ARS Film Production, Taipei, Taiwan on 12 August 2015. The interview probes his creative vision and filmmaking practices in order to obtain further insight into how Taiwan cinema and its workforce respond and adapt to constantly evolving environment.
